Visibility has a direct impact on flight safety. A large proportion of unsafe incidents and flight accidents at home and abroad are caused by low visibility conditions. Atmospheric transmissometers and forward scatterometers are automatic visibility observation devices. However, limited by their sampling space, their horizontal observation coverage differs greatly from manual observation. The measurement data from a single set of equipment cannot be directly used to observe and report the prevailing visibility at airports.
The visibility lidar scans horizontally with a fixed step size (such as in the range of 2 °~180 °), taking about 5-30 minutes to complete one circle (scanning speed can be set). The average visibility at each scanning angle is calculated, and the maximum visibility value that can be achieved within the 180 ° angle range is used as the prevailing visibility. Compared to forward scatter sensor and transmissometer, using lidar for prevailing visibility measurement is more representative.
